Phase One (Tale of Strength and Weakness)

[Overbearing mother]

Lying on the couch at the psychiatrists office in HQ, Jimmy tells the story of his mother:

“I neva knew me pap. He lef me mum in 1852, befo I was even borne. Me mam rose me up. She neva was very nice to me, always sayin I was dumb. She neva wanted a boy, she always say. If only I’d a been a girl. Then I’d a been worth something on the black market. So she always hit me a lot.

“When I was ten, she got the cholera and died pre’y fastlike. I raised meself on the streets from then on.

“If I eva see her again, I swear I’ll giev her a peice o’ me mind.”

Phase Two (Tale of Determination and Cowardice)
Events:

[lies to authority]

“I was eight years old and feedin a knuckle edison (in Jimmy’s timeline, sandwiches are called “edisons” after their inventor) to this chump Rodney in the east end because he looked funny when this coppa comes up to me and says ‘eh, what you doin to that boy’. I didn’t know what to do! I couldn’t beat up the coppa: he had a steam-baton. So I said ‘I just caught this bugger stealin a purse from an ol’ lady. I was gettin it back for her.’

“The coppa knew all us urchins, and he knew Rodney to be a stealer. Plus, I just so happened to have an ol’ lady’s purse in me pants. I surrendered my loot and Rodney, who was too beaten to talk. He went off to jail, and I was alright.”
